"Supernumeraries" was shot on board an operating container vessel and on the colonial tea clipper 'Cutty Sark' in summer 2003.
The film collapses the romanticised portrayal of life at sea into an account of the precarious contemporary conditions of maritime law, statelessness and labour exploitation. Based on a short story by Joseph Conrad, it centres on the crisis of action precipitated by the discovery of a stowaway on board a cargo vessel, taking the captain to the limit point of his sovereignty.
